Origin and production
“ STARNANIS – A SWEET AND SPICY SPICE FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA ”.
Star anise originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly China and Vietnam. It is obtained from the star-shaped, dried seed pods of the evergreen Illicium verum tree. Cultivation is predominantly carried out on small farms, where the warm, humid climate provides ideal conditions for its intense aroma. The distinctive star shape is what gives the spice its name.
Taste and aroma
Star anise has an intense, sweet and spicy flavor with distinct notes of licorice and cloves. Its warm, slightly bitter aroma is unmistakable and adds depth and character to dishes. This combination of sweetness, spice, and mild heat makes it a popular ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes.
Application
In Asian cuisine, star anise is a key ingredient in classic spice blends like five-spice powder and aromatic broths such as pho. It pairs wonderfully with braised dishes, curries, stews, and meat sauces, but also with desserts, compotes, pastries, and mulled wine. Whole or ground, it develops its full aroma best when cooked.
Interesting facts
Star anise is rich in essential oils, especially anethole, which is also found in anise and is responsible for its characteristic flavor. For centuries it has been valued in traditional cuisine and natural medicine – both as a spice and for its beneficial properties.
