Panch Phoron, the classic Bengali five-spice blend, originated in the Bengal region and is an essential element of local cuisine. This unground spice blend consists of five aromatic seeds: fenugreek, cumin, ajwain, fennel, and mustard seeds. In Bengali cuisine, the seeds are roasted in hot ghee (rendered butter) until they develop a fragrant aroma. Panch Phoron is particularly well-known for its use in vegetable and lentil dishes, but also adds a distinctive flavor to stir-fries.
