Origin and production
This vibrant spice blend originates from the Mexican region of Yucatán and is based on a traditional Recado Rojo recipe. Ground achiote seeds form the base, combined with select spices that give the blend its signature earthy, warm aroma.
Taste and aroma
Spicy, deep, and slightly smoky. Achiote seeds provide the characteristic red color and a mild nutty note. Cumin and coriander seeds add depth and warmth, while oregano and cloves provide a herbal and slightly sweet-spicy note.
Application
Ideal for marinating pork, chicken, or fish – e.g., for Cochinita Pibil. It's also excellent for braised dishes and grilled food. Simply mix it with a little lemon or orange juice and oil to form a paste, rub it into the meat, and let it marinate for several hours.
Health benefits
Achiote is rich in natural antioxidants and carotenoids. Spices such as cumin, coriander, and oregano can have anti-inflammatory effects and aid digestion.
